Our radio stations are playing Christmas music 24/7 and they don’t seem to have a wide variety of CD’s, because they repeat the same songs over and over. Maybe they play it safe and everything unusual stays in the shelf, because they fear it would startle some of their listeners.
Don’t get me wrong, I love some of the classic songs like “White Christmas” or “Holly Jolly Christmas”, but I swear I am going to throw my radio in the trash, if I hear Mariah Carey’s “All I want for Christmas” one more time. Enough is enough!
Maybe I am just really a little “grinchy” this Chrismas, but I started searching for some unusual and underplayed Christmas music and I think I came up with some nice stuff. (Hey, I like it what can I say!)
“White Christmas” by Ottis Redding
What an interesting version this is.
“Fairytale of New York” by The Pogues
A classic in the UK that sould shake up our radio stations a little bit (wishful thinking).
“Thank you God it’s Christmas” by Queen
Freddie’s voice at it’s best.
“Christmas must be tonight” by The Band
My all time favorite version of “Silent Night”
“Silent Night” by Mahelia Jackson
Lovely music selections. Silent Night is a favorite of mine too 🙂 Love Jackson’s voice.

Oh wow! You came up with some great ones! I LOVE Ottis. But have never heard that one! And Jane Basil at Making it write just introduced me to “Fairytale of New York.” Really liked it. Queen and The Band were both very nice. I know Queen mostly because they did the theme music for Highlander, the tv series. And Mahelia can’t be beat. When we moved to Utah in ’62 we lived right down the street from one of her sisters (can’t remember the exact relation). Her nephew Calvin (called Tiny, lol) was one of my brother’s best friends. And I agree with you about “All I Want for Christmas” and also, if I have to hear “Last Christmas I Gave You My Heart” one more time I think I’ll puke! 😛

Ottis Redding’s “White Christmas” is now one of my favorites. Isn’t it great?

Really, I think he could have sung the phone book and made it sound awesome.

There are lots of young kids playing their instruments on the streets of where we are living. They play the notes and all of them have a container for coins in front of them. Some of them are very good. I give them a dollar or so and it’s great so many learn to play music. I am a bit over Christmas songs though. It seems to embed in my brain almost like brainwashing. Jingle bells, jingle bells on and on it seems to drone endlessly, and that is without the ‘rudolf the red nosed reindeer’.
I want to hear the silence of snow on a spruce-tree.

I found Mahelia’s version of Silent Night over 20 years ago, it’s always the last song on Christmas Evening that we listen to, before we get drunk LOL

I wonder what would be unusual about Christmas music or are the DJ’s simply jaded?
