Friday Fictioneers – The Castle

Photo Prompt  Jan Wayne Fields

‘I am looking forward to camping with you.’

She smiled at me, and as always it made my heart melt.

‘This is the most beautiful place I have ever seen,’ she said and clapped her hands like a little girl.

Even after so many years, I am fascinated by her ability to share her joy.

For her, it’s a castle, and I am her Prince, no matter where we are.

All of a sudden the tent looks inviting and I look forward to camping as well.

We will make it work, we will not be homeless for too long.

  1. I really enjoyed the subtlety of your take on the prompt. She was very sweet and unaffected. I had a friend a bit like that at school. Had such an appreciation for the little things and always so excited when you’d give her a present.
Great twist in the last line.

  2. Lovely story of hope and optimism. I liked the line ” clapped her hands like a little girl.” I could envision her.

  3. Ah, that was very well told – and so much in that last line! You built a lovelt relationship in so few words, and then the killer at the end. Nicely done. And you’re right – we can cram a hell of a lot in 100 words 🙂
