friendship

What do you value most in a friendship?

“The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for.”
― Bob Marley

I am married to my best friend, and it goes without saying that Bob Marley’s statement is true. We hurt people, mostly without knowing, and we get hurt. Some very special people are indeed worth suffering for.  My life has been blessed with very good friends, and each one of them is different. It’s very hard for me to pinpoint what I value most. I assume it’s the 3 “H’s” ….Heart, Humor, and Honesty.

Do you prefer eating the frosting of the cake or the cupcake first?  Do you prefer a specific flavor?

I don’t eat cakes anymore, I have given up dairy products and any cake that is made without dairy, doesn’t deserve to be called cake. My Grandmother made a Buttercream Torte for special occasions. It was heavenly, I never tasted anything like it again. For a piece of her cake, I would cheat on my new lifestyle and would suffer the consequences.

Have you ever been in a submarine?  If you haven’t, would you want to?

I have been in a submarine. In the North of Germany, there is a small town called Laboe and right there on the beach, close to the water is an old U-995 submarine. I was a teenager but remember it very well. I stepped into the submarine, and my mind was quickly made up. Any career would be okay, but I would never (ever) go to the Navy. I don’t like small places, I don’t like rooms without a view. I think living on a submarine would kill me, or I would go crazy. I admire people who can do it. It made me feel claustrophobic, I couldn’t wait to leave.

If 100 people your age were chosen at random, how many do you think you’d find leading a more satisfying life than yours?

Nobody had a more satisfying life than me, not even the Queen and she is old, and my life is far from over. I have been very lucky and very fortunate in my life. I wouldn’t trade with anybody, not even the sad moments. Most of us have been very fortunate.

Optional Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

I am not sure if that’s just a genuine feeling that comes with age, or if I wear rose colored glasses but  I just feel grateful lately. Nothing, in particular, stands out.

In the coming week, I will put our Christmas decoration up, and I am looking forward to it. I can’t wait to see what’s waiting there in the attic. I know we bought some new stuff at the last annual garage sale. Unboxing it all, I swear it’s like Christmas every year. 🙂

  1. Very few of the 100 would have lives more interesting than mine, but many, probably more than 50, would have a more satisfying life than I do. The good news, however, is that I am becoming more satisfied by learning to be happier with what I have and not so regretful over certain social deficiencies. This is a pretty promising time in my life.

  2. Loved your replies. Especially the one in which you have mentioned about the imperfectly perfect life of yours. I guess we all have that but we never really count our blessings

  3. It would be difficult for me too to pinpoint what I value the most in a friend. Like you, my friends are quite different and I value them in different ways. I like your 3 H’s though – I’ve never heard that expression before but heart, humour, and honesty really does sum it up quite nicely.

  4. My biological father was in a submarine during World War II and he described it as a hellish experience. He offered few details, but since he joined the Navy at age 16 on a forged document to indicate he was 18, and looked about 13 when he first shipped out in 1941, I believe he was abused repeatedly by roughnecks who took him for a child. So submarines hold no mistuique for me.👎

    • I can just imagine. My Grandfather fought in WWII, my Grandmother hid in the Alp for many month. Neither one of them talked much about the times. I guess they all decided not to bother us with too much information.
