Diane, over at “Ladies who Lunch reviews, etc.” had the nerve to tag me for the A-Song-A-Day-Challenge. My husband laughed out loud when I told him about it. “You are going to lose a few followers,” he said, and I just nodded. My friends always joke that I should never lose my iPod, “People would think you are crazy,” they say, and I fear they might be right.
The rules for this challenge are simple. You post some of your favorite song lyrics for five days in a row, preferably with a video -if available. Then, you think about two bloggers who have pissed you off lately, and nominate them to participate as well. Just kidding! The chosen ones then have the choice and can take part -if they wish- or crush my little heart.
I nominate: My life lived full and A day in the Life, because I hope to meet them both in real life and I can’t wait to see what we wold be listening to, while enjoying a glass of wine -or two or three.
About the song:
The first song is not just one of my favorites -but also from my “normal” music stack. It’s a song for all women. It was written and performed back at a time when women wanted to be liberated. Somehow I feel it’s now more important than ever before. Here in the U.S. women are on the streets again, fighting for the right to be equal, fighting to be heard.
I am Woman
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an’ pretend
‘Cause I’ve heard it all before
And I’ve been down there on the floor
No one’s ever gonna keep me down again
Oh yes, I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible
(Invincible)
I am woman
You can bend but never break me
‘Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
‘Cause you’ve deepened the conviction in my soul
Oh yes, I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible
(Invincible)
I am woman
I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin’ arms across the land
But I’m still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until I make my brother understand
Oh yes, I am wise
But it’s wisdom born of pain
Yes, I’ve paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can face anything
I am strong
(Strong)
I am invincible
(Invincible)
I am woman
I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman

This is the second time this week I have seen references to Ms Reddy and her anthem of my youth. Must be a sign to include its message in the memoir I am writing for my daughters and other young women, a reminder that their forgotten predecessors, including their mom, fought many of the battles that have opened up opportunities for them that they now may take for granted.

OMG I see you nominated me!! I have been under the weather and just catching up on reading- I will join in, starting tonight or tomorrow when I have more free time my friend!! I remember when this song came out, it was a big “women’s lib” song, my mother was walking around the house singing it. 🙂

As a mere male I am firmly of the belief that if all countries were led by women then there would be no war, no injustice, no inequality, and famine would be sorted out in a very short time. Just for the record that is a genuine feeling!

I remember this one. Wow, it’s been some years since I’ve last heard it but it’s all coming back now.

My first reaction when I read this was to say ‘oh crap’. After reflecting on this for a while, my prevailing reaction is ‘oh crap-on-a-stick’.
Really? You want me to subject people to this? My taste in music is … well, shall we say … complicated.
Would I sound like a complete heretic to say I’ve always disliked this Helen Reddy song? Like I said … complicated.

Laughter here My music taste is rather complicated as well.
I heard this song the first time at a protest for women’s rights in the 70’s. Years later I heard it in another country where women protested for the right to be heard.
I like the song for what it stands for, the music…not really my thing.

If we were sitting together with a glass of wine, we could have a long, probably incoherent conversation about the peculiarities in our taste for music.

Yes, and who laughs first about the music choice of the other, has to open the next bottle. 🙂

A great song. It always makes me think of Billy Jean King for some reason. If only women were ruling the world. 😀

That’s a good way to go about nominating people. I like the way you think! 😃😃

I remember this song when it was an anthem for women when no one was paying attention…and then Helen came out with this and busted the topic open. Great times! And yes…it is absolutely relevant for today, maybe now more than ever. Great post! (P.S. people tease me about my “old school” music choices too. Hmmph…that was when music rocked!) 😛

I am glad you agree with me. I like the word anthem. “I am woman” should be our anthem.
(I wish I could call my music taste “Old school”)
