The Grass is Greener when it becomes a Straw

I couldn’t help myself and had to waste my money and order a re-usable straw. What a great idea, but not if you have only one. Come to find out, it was never ready to be used when I needed it. Either I was out and the straw was at home, or I was at home but the straw had decided to nap in my workroom.

I try to do watch out for the environment, but honestly sometimes it’s really hard and I quickly give up when it’s becomes inconvenient.

Plastic drinking straws are disposable products that harm our environment. They primarily pollute rivers and seas, which really doesn’t have to be the case!

Sip once and they end up in the trash – plastic straws. Plastic straws are one of the things that should quickly disappear from our planet.

Undoubtedly, a more environmentally friendly alternative would be nice, but nothing blew my socks off until now. Turns out other countries are aware of the problem as well and they are trying to come up with a solution.

The young Vietnamese Tran Minh Tien has therefore recently decided to counteract this problem. His idea, straws made from sedge grass – a compostable and ecological alternative to conventional plastic straws.

Brilliant, just brilliant!

The bark grass that grows along the Mekong Delta is naturally hollow and straw-shaped. Its properties make it a wonderful natural drinking straw, that does not have any negative consequences for our planet. On the contrary, it can be easily composted.

So far, Tran has produced 2 different organic straws – a dried and a fresh version. At the end of the manufacturing process, the finished grass straws are bundled in banana leaves.

The fresh version lasts for around 2 weeks, while the dried ones have a shelf life of 6 months. According to Tran Minh Tien, both types are also edible. They are even ideal for cleaning teeth and gums.

Of course, the idea now seems to be to replace all plastic straws in the world with such an alternative. That is basically also the mission, which is why it is very gratifying that other companies have already jumped on this bandwagon.

For example “Zero Waste Saigon” – a sustainable company from Vietnam, which is also concerned with cleaning up our planet.

If such environmentally friendly solutions are to prevail, it is important that we all pull together. So help yourself by doing without plastic straws.

Avoid plastic -together we are strong

Alright, I am going to give it another try with my re-usable straw. Maybe I need to wear it around my neck? Or perhaps I need to buy more?

  1. Thank You for sharing this info! Currently, I have reusable straws. They even came with a mini-brush to clean the inside too! But that’s a temporary solution. Eventually I’ll need to dispose of them. The negative environmental impact remains. 😔 Your find makes me happy! I’ll be on the lookout!
