Little House on the Prairie…

Alt_Telefon

Some younger bloggers might find it hard to believe, but I grew up in a house without a phone and it worked just fine. We had to run to the neighbor’s house, if there was an emergency, but that wasn’t too often. Life without a phone was normal for many and as for texting, that word was non existing.

The phone came later, when I was a teenager and my school was further away. That changed my Grandmothers opinion about this modern stuff. One day I came home and there it was, on a small table in the kitchen, our own phone. It took a while to get used to it. It didn’t ring too often and our daily life wasn’t interrupted by phone calls. It was always a little bit exciting when it rung. “Who was calling for who, and what was the occasion?”, because people did not just call for no reason, there was always something important going on.

There was a lot of loud taking and yelling going on these days. The reception wasn’t always the best, lots of static in the lines and somehow we thought we had to talk louder, when the caller lived in a different town.

Talking on the phone felt odd and it took some time to get used to it. How weird to talk to someone without seeing them? No facial impression…just the voice. Yes, times were different then and I start to sound like one of the characters in “Little House on the Prarie”.

The phone was used to exchange informations. Calls were expensive, so we tried to keep them short. Phones then, were not in control of our everyday life and that was a good thing.

I have a cell phone and I text, but only short and important informations. Something like “stuck in traffic..be home soon”.

The keyword in today’s daily prompt is communicate.

Call my old-fashioned, but I simply refuse to downgrade my communicating skills to a texting level. I love voices, I want to hear the laughter in someones voice, I want to hear the surprise and all the other emotions, that make a conversation special, when I can’t meet the person in real.  An LOL does not replace the giggle in someones voice.

So, to finally answer todays daily prompt. No, I DO NOT communicate differently…because I hardly text at all and I am loving it.

It’s a Text, Text, Text, Text World

How do you communicate differently online than in person, if at all? How do you communicate emotion and intent in a purely written medium?

  1. Hi there! What a great and wise post… You don’t what, I have a blackberry and almost don’t text either…. I am not the cell phone type I guess… But I love to email with my closer friends on line… I don’t use facebook, I keep it up mainly with twitter and Google Plus when it comes to social media…
The old phone was the best thing ever… But we can’t say that Skype is a marvelous tool, though, right?…. Oh and Little House on the Prairie, I love that show and watched it when I was a kid…
Sending love & best wishes! Aquileana ⭐

    • I am so glad to hear you are not one of the text maniacs. I love emails and use my phone to check on my emails as well. Guilty as charged. I don’t participate in the social media circus. Sending you hugs and love my friend 🙂

  2. I caught this prompt in my inbox, passed over it and landed on your use of it, lol.

I know what you mean about enjoying hearing folks’ voices, but I can ” hear” that person I know well via their texts too. I don’t live to text, but I do like its conveniences.

  3. The phone now is giving angst to almost everybody. It creates breakdowns and discords and seems to have a life of its own. Everybody is connected to some kind of universal charnel house, a concentrated bedlam of flying over a cuckoo nest without a safety net. Watch out for G6 getting rolled out by Apple and blackberry, all giving diarhea and relentless intestinal hurry to millions all over the world.

  4. I lived for a year without a phone in Israel and got used to it. If I had calls to make, I went to a nearby shop or hotel and made my calls. Otherwise, people dropped by the house. Yup, without calling first. Just knocked right on that door. Imagine that 🙂 I don’t like being available all the time. We have a lot of noise in our world without much communication. I hope it goes the other way. Soon!

    • I just refuse to be the slave of my phone. I enjoy quality time with my husband and with my friends as well. I have one of those fancy phones, tried it for a while and didn’t like the direction it was taking me. I too wish people will come to their senses soon.
