What a history this show has. The list of distinguished hosts includes names like Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Bryant Gumbel, Katie Couric and Meredith Vieira. Even Matt Lauer, who got fired for sexual misconduct in November, could be named as a good journalist in his early years. Yes, there was a time when good journalism was part of the show. Bad news – Fake news – Biased news – Bad media – Bad press – Lying press. We all heard the slogans lately and I couldn’t help research it a bit more.
For a time, “bias” was the term of choice to describe anything people hated about journalism, whether the power and influence of corporate news organizations to the choices reporters made in writing individual stories. In 2001, in fact, a book about media unfairness entitled “Bias” was number one on the New York Times bestseller list. Continue reading
