Ohio passed a bill last night, a bill that would drastically change the abortion rights. It is called the HEARTBEAT BILL but I would recommend to rename it to HEARTBREAK BILL instead.
We are a childless couple, we couldn’t be the family that we wanted to be, we became a stronger US instead. I had my share of heartache. I looked with envy at the pregnant women around me. Why couldn’t I have what they could? There was even a time when I refused to look at babies, that’s how cheated I felt. The easiest thing in the word, the most natural thing in the world was denied to us. Life isn’t fair, I learned that early on.
But even as a young woman who yearned to have children, even then did I believe that a woman should have more rights than a fetus. I am not pro-abortion, but I am pro-choice. The old question when life begins has put this bill on the table. Empowered by the election of Donald Trump, the Republican lawmakers try to cut women and girl’s rights. When does life begin? Is it with the heartbeat, or is it when the brain develops. If it’s the heartbeat, why do we turn off the machines if someone is brain dead?
The Heartbeat-Bill will prohibit abortion as soon as a fetal heartbeat can be detected, at around six weeks -way before many women and girls even realize that they are pregnant.
It goes further into detail, that it will also prohibit abortion under the same law if rape or incest took place. Women would have to stay pregnant, even at the cost of their own life.
The bill would make it a fifth-degree felony, punishable by up to one year in prison, for a physician to perform an abortion without checking for a fetal heartbeat or performing the procedure after it can be detected. The doctor also could face a civil lawsuit from the mother and disciplinary action.
While several states have considered fetal heartbeat abortion bans, only two passed it, Arkansas and North Dakota. The laws in both states were later found to be unconstitutional by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and declared illegal. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear appeals.
The new President-Elect and the new Supreme Court justice appointees have changed the dynamic in this country, and it’s not even January yet.
I am not a young woman anymore, now I am an older woman who never will have Grandchildren. But even now at an age where I don’t have to worry about an unwanted pregnancy, even now I would like to get up and scream STOP.
Once again do I stand on the sideline and feel that women’s rights are being trampled on. Once again do I feel that women will be puppets on a string for so many in power. Politics and religion they all want to rule us -again.
President-Elect Donald Trump said it himself, he believes that women should be punished if they have an abortion. “Poor little babies get cut out of the womb,” he said at a Presidential debate. I sat at home and shook my head. “Poor little babies are being forced having babies,” does that sound better?
Have we not learned a thing? Abortion has always been around -will always be around. If we don’t allow young women and girls to have a say in this, then we force them to have the procedure done in a back alley -often without a doctor. Do we really want to go back to that?
Where I came from we called these back alley abortion places, “Angelmakers.” Many women and many girls didn’t survive -still, they went there, it was their last hope.
We are all equal, are we not? To provide equal protection under the law, shouldn’t these abortion-restricting laws also equally punish the expectant fathers? It takes two to tango.
How can a fetus have more rights? How can a fetus decide over a woman’s health?
Having a child or abortion, either way, it is a very personal decision of a woman and no one should impose a moral code. How can we have the death penalty and so easily take a human life, and then turn around and cry out when a fetus gets aborted?
In a perfect world, there wouldn’t be an unwanted pregnancy, there wouldn’t be rape and incest. Babies wouldn’t have babies, and there wouldn’t be any health concerns. Newsflash: We don’t live in a perfect world!
I hope young women and men in this country will get up and protest! The war against women is still going on.
This new law should not pass, not here in Ohio or anywhere else. It is unconstitutional and cruel. I do hope that Governor Kasich will veto it, yet I don’t hold my breath.
Good post. It’s pretty interesting how laws come to be and the variety from state to state. I recently started a blog about my law school experience check it out if you have a chance.

I’m not rational when it comes to discussing abortion and the Anti-Choice group. Yes, they can hide behind any self-righteous name they like, but in the end they are *Anti-Choice* and their position on abortion is tantamount to keeping women as third class citizens.
You presented a great argument, Bridget. I liked the line “a woman should have more rights than a fetus”.

I am pro-choice, no question about it. I am furious that we here in the United States of Trump are tying to turn the clock back to a time when women had to jeopardize their life to get a safe abortion.
We had to fight so hard to be heard and now, once again they try to make us breeders.
The bill however didn’t pass. The governor vetoed it. Instead we have now a 20-week bill in place that forbids abortion after 20 weeks, even if the baby would be deformed.

I’ve never understood why so many people have such strong views on abortion. The mother is the only one whose opinion matters. If she feels, for whatever reason, that she cannot go through with the pregnancy, she should have the option to have a safe abortion under proper medical supervision. If that option is taken away, desperate women will still try to end their unwanted pregnancies by whatever means they can, risking severe damage to their health or even death. How can that ever be considered right?

As you know, I agree with everything you just wrote. Unfortunately, here in the U.S. religion interferes quite often with common sense.

Religion is the worst thing ever. Throughout history it has caused more wars, destruction and unhappiness than anything else. If i was going to ban anything, I’d ban religion. All religions. No exceptions.

I am with you. A great man and leader named Ataturk has said this many years ago.”I have no religion, and at times I wish all religions at the bottom of the sea. He is a weak ruler who needs religion to uphold his government; it is as if he would catch his people in a trap. My people are going to learn the principles of democracy, the dictates of truth and the teachings of science. Superstition must go. Let them worship as they will; every man can follow his own conscience, provided it does not interfere with sane reason or bid him against the liberty of his fellow-men.

No woman should have to go through what I experienced because the abortion laws. The pain and heartbreak every time the doctor said the baby is dead let’s take it. I couldn’t even get a hystermony before I was 45 years. Every miscarriage was painful. I still have pain from my female problems. I still find it hard to look at babies. It is each woman’s choice.

I managed to put it behind me but Every time this comes up. With each pregnancy I thought this was the one God would let have. Only it wasn’t. Hugs back to you. I remember each one and they took a piece of my heart and left some those behind. I spent two year in pain, I could have all the cocaine I want but refused. When they went in to tied my tubes they took everything as it was so bad. This was back in the 80’s. The medical community prefers to made woman addicts instead of helping. I now have knowledge of why I miscarried.

I think the knowledge that we have today and the memory of past times, should prevent us from getting back in time – I hope so.

I totally agree.
Long time ago, I saw a movie, where the guy pushed the girl from the stairs, because he was so scared to tell anyone he got her pregnant. I think, cases like these will become common as the women and men will find thr owns ways to abort the babies.
Who will be responsible for all those unwanted MURDER of the women thn?

I remember the time in the 80’s when I was young. Young women were scared to get pregnant, there were all kind of “cures” they talked about in case it happened. Illegal abortion clinics made a shitload of money and women suffered.
This is the 21st century and I hope we don’t got back to hurting people on purpose.

I hope they will think wisely before illegalising it totally. I heard a discussion about this today, where they mentioned that the “Big” people are involved in the illegal clinics to get “Black money”.
But still not very sure.

Right on. All these legal wranglings that are put in place to effectively restrict women from getting safe treatment is so frustrating. I hope this Ohio law gets struck down as unconstitutional.

I like your distinction between pro-choice and pro-abortion.
My personal feeling it that it really should be a last-ditch, no-other-choice option that is legal, safe, and accessible/affordable for those who really need it. I believe the global average for the latest safe (for the woman) date is around 14-16 weeks? If the general consensus among medical experts is fine with that, then so am I.
What astounds me is how in your country the same people who want to limit or totally restrict access to abortion are also the ones restricting and limiting access to affordable birth control and sex education to help prevent unwanted pregnancies in the first place.
We don’t have these conversations here in Canada. Yes there are many who are dead-set against abortion but they have enough sense to know that education and access to affordable birth control options are big parts of the solution. The conversation here isn’t about limiting access to safe abortions, but more about trying to figure out the best solution to prevent the unplanned pregnancies that are still happening.
Hopefully this law gets vetoed or struck down as unconstitutional in court.

Years ago, a very good friend of mine had to have an abortion for medical reasons. They told her the chances she would survive a full therm pregnancy were slim. She and her husband wanted that child so bad, but decided to terminate the pregnancy. They went through hell, it was hard on them, but it was the right decision. Later on, she had a life changing surgery (heart vault replacement) and now they have two children in college.
Forcing women to carry out unwanted pregnancies makes us breeders.
I am with you on education. Young girls need to know their options, they need access to birth control. There is so much more to it.
In the end I don’t want women to have back alley abortions ever again. That is inhuman. The same party who defends the death penalty and the right to own firearms and shoot people, is against abortion. It’s almost laughable!

I’m amazed that a political party that is so pro-gun, pro-war, pro-death penalty, anti-health care, and anti-contraceptive can call themselves pro-life. It drives me absolutely crazy!
A heartfelt and important message, Bridget. The underlying message is that women are incapable of making thoughtful choices without the government’s help. It’s the worst kind of arrogance and women shouldn’t stand for it. ❤

You nailed it! As you know, I wish that the government would allow me to die with dignity if I have a fatal disease and I wish they would allow women to have the final say when it comes to giving life.
Taking peoples choice away is not the answer.

Pingback: The Heartbeat Law and Heartbreak — The happy Quitter! | Willow's Corner
Interesting post. I agree – a heartbeat is a narrow way to define human life. What about people with LVAD’s? And those on bypass? Do they become “un-human” because their heart is not the one circulating their blood? This “heartbeat” policy is emotionalism, not facts.
But let’s talk facts, and reason. What does make life a human being? Because that’s what this is about. If the fetus is proven to be human, then abortion would have to end – as we would agree that a lifetime outweighs nine-months of inconvenience. And all people are created equal with a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
I have trouble understanding your claim: “I am not pro-abortion, but I am pro-choice” – why are you not pro-abortion?
The other statement that is difficult to grasp: “abortion is a very personal decision” and thus should be left to the mother – unimpeded by the government. Forgive me if it comes off as offensive, but don’t you want the government to step in? I am speaking of birth. Should whether a mother chooses to kill her newborn be left to her? This is also a “personal decision.” We wouldn’t support the woman’s right to decide whether her born infant is a human or not – why her unborn infant? The government has an obligation to protect human beings. Being enclosed in a uterus or not, is a bad definition of human life. Isn’t allowing women to choose for themselves when life begins a step in a dangerous direction. What if some women don’t believe life begins until their child can walk? Should they have the “right to choose?” My point – it’s all about defining when human life begins.
So, if I may inquire: how do you define human life, and when – in your opinion – does that life begin?
Thanks for your time, and God bless. Also, I am charmed by your lady-bug pic! 🙂

If you read my post and didn’t understand my position, then nothing I might write now will make you understand.
When does life begin, well now it depends on technology. Years ago it was when the mother could feel the baby kicking, then with ultrasound it changed and so one day, it will begin with the production of sperm and masturbation will be outlawed.
Life ends when I can’t breath on my own, but today it doesn’t end because machines can take over and they keep us alive for as long as they want to, even though it’s not a life.
I am glad you liked the Lady Bug picture. 🙂

The Supreme Court blocked in the other two states and now we have a vacant seat on the Supreme Court and Trump will fill the seat with an old-fashioned conservative. That’s the real pity of this election. The Supreme Court will hurt us for more than 4 years.

President-Elect is not elected yet. He will be elected at December 19th. The public vote doesn’t count here in the U.S. the states have outdated electoral voters in place and they decide -once again- who will be President.
Hillary Clinton won by more than 2 Million. Donald Trump will be the most unpopular President in the history of the United States.
